Black mussels are found along most of the South African coastline and are often just boiled in a pot or steamed in their own juices on an open fire and eaten out of the shell.
This dish is made traditionally in France and commonly known over there as Moules Mariniere. Mussels are an acquired taste with a strong flavour unlike any other seafood. You either love or hate the taste and for those of you have never much enjoyed the natural way of preparing mussels steamed open in a pot this adds a more subtle taste to the dish giving it a more elegant finish to these somewhat tough sometimes sandy little customers and a new way to enjoy eating them with a bottle of your favorite white wine.
